Outside the Scope of Control 2023
Marbling is a ceramic decorative technique that involves mixing different-colored clay bodies. Through complex processes such as throwing, hand shaping, and polishing, a unique texture is created by intertwining different-colored clays. Marbled clay can display various patterns, such as flowers, wood grains, stone patterns, or various swirling designs.
However, due to the use of different types of clay, pottery, and porcelain in the objects, the firing process can be challenging, as the materials have different coefficients of expansion, which can result in cracks. Additionally, the technique itself involves intricate steps. By layering, twisting, and experimenting with different configurations, I can attempt to control the patterns on the clay body. Through extensive practice and experience, I can generally predict the patterns on the clay body, but I still cannot fully control the variations in the marbled clay.
The resulting details in the artwork are filled with a dialogue between unexpected exploration and control. This dialogue gives each piece a unique texture and detail. This technique allows me to maintain a balance between freedom and limitations.
